Smoocher’s Special - live music at Drakes in Basingstoke

Press Release - 28 January 2003

Were you there when the Gigmania TV pilot was filmed at Drake’s Bar last summer? If you didn’t get the chance to be involved in the making, you now have the chance to be one of the first to see it when it is given its first public viewing on Sunday February 16 2003 .

In conjunction with Rubberband Promotions the programme will be shown as part of the Sunday Sessions LIVE Valentine’s Day celebrations, the ‘Smoocher’s Special’, at Drake’s Bar on Basingstoke’s London Street.

Following the success of the Sunday Sessions LIVE Xmas Party when Stupid sang Kevin Bloody Wilson’s ‘Santa Claus You BLEEP, Where’s my BLEEPING Bike?’ Rubberband decided to follow a similar format. Six local bands have been asked to perform two self-penned tunes and one cover of a smoochie love song in any style they choose. After the hilarities of the last event, who knows what the Smoocher’s Special will bring! How about that annoying Celine Dion/Titanic song in the style of Eminem or Sexual Healing sung like Cheeky Girls? Maybe not…

Soulful funk-rock band Kaldera will be playing live along with Tom Baker of powerful indie-rock band Bodaseed. Matt Heggarty (ex-Adama), singer/songwriter Mike Halliwell, acoustic duo Cherry Red (two girls, both blonde, gorgeous and very funny – what more could you ask for?) and power-popsters Aubrey Lemmon, all make their debut appearance at SSL.

Working to a commission by Channel 4, the pilot is the brain-child of up and coming TV presenter and local music personality Jim Bowes. The 30 minute long programme features four well-known local bands One Iota, Austen, The Beat Collective and Wire Jesus performing original music and will be shown on two screens in between each of the six bands performing live.

Jim is also the SSL resident compere and in keeping with the theme for the evening he will be providing Valentine’s games (and no end of witty insights and random abuse) offering ample opportunity to shame yourself in front of all your mates.

Smoocher’s Special is sponsored by Archers who have supplied prizes and a free bottle of Archers Aqua to all the girls. ‘Free alcohol?’ I hear you cry – suddenly I sense that cross-dressing may become temporarily fashionable. Forget it lads!

Tickets for the Sunday Sessions LIVE ‘Smoocher’s Special’ cost £3.50. Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. Check out www.rubberbandpromotions.co.uk for more information or visit www.wegottickets.com to book on-line. Doors open at 7pm, licence until midnight .
